Her family name tainted by her great-grandfather’s crimes of piracy, Meriden Cummings is far from the typical 18th century woman. A social outcast, she works in a carpentry shop in a small village, where the people barely tolerate unconventional behavior.
However, her life takes a turn after a gang of pirates attack her village and her blood reveals an ancient map adorned with Mayan glyphs leading to Death Island. An island legends say is ruled by the Mayan god of the underworld, Ah Puch. Her great-grandfather had sought after the island before he vanished without a trace. Now, Meriden is about to journey across the sea to understand her family history.
There are only a few problems: her growing feelings toward a mysterious stranger linked to her great-grandfather’s past; a greedy band of pirates after her great-grandfather’s legendary treasure; and a contract she has unwittingly signed in blood with Ah Puch himself.
Six Things to Know About Death Island
It’s been so long, I don’t even think I know how to write a review anymore. 😭
So instead of a full-fledged review as I would love to do… we’re going to good old lists! (I do love lists, don’t you?)
Mayan Mythology! – I don’t know about everyone else reading this, but I love mythology. Since Egyptian, Roman, and Greek mythology tends to be really popular… it’s really nice to see something different.
It’s slow at first, but picks up later – Death Island isn’t my first novel written by Kelsey Ketch, but it’s been a while since I’ve read her books. (Heck, it’s been awhile since I’ve read a book and enjoyed it…) It’s a book that’s slow at first but eventually picks up as we get further into the story and does not let down until the very end. Ketch will pull you into the adventures the characters experience and keep pulling you until you finally finish the novel. There are some peeps who can vouch for me – I was a grumpy bookworm when they tried to get me to go questing with them on a game…
Feisty main character – Meriden is stubborn, badass, has wits about her… okay that sounds really weird put together into an actual sentence…
Pirates – Yes, pirates. That’s all I need to say honestly. And… and… Pirates of the Caribbean vibessss.
But that ending?! – I might not be surprised right now, but eeeeep. During that entire time as it unfolded, I had my eyes glued to the pages like someone addicted to Netflix.
Okay, but is there another ending?! – Honestly I don’t want to give spoilers, but I swear… I want to see the second ending for some reason. 👀
Obviously, my brain is a jumbled mess right now. Someone save me from embarrassment. 🙈
