Everyone has a favorite character.
Whether you’re a bookwyrm or not, you have one, or two or well… let’s just cut to the chase and say the hard facts here: we have a stockpile of favorite characters who we want to adopt and scurry away from the creators. I think our host Jamsu @ Jamsudreams will agree (you know, I’m bending the rules, Jamsu, but don’t curse me!).
But they’re cursed.
Someone once mentioned on Twitter how mentioning our favorite character somehow unleashes a curse on them when the next book comes out. The next thing we know, they’re dead! Killed off unjustly in the most horrible ways. We’re set to suffer, bookwyrms.
It’s like authors know we’ll love them to pieces, so they take our favorites and put them on an adventurous journey that will most likely kill them off in the end. In the entire process, the smol actions from these precious beans will slither their way straight into our hearts. Before we know it, we’re wrapped around their fingers – not that they will ever know it.
They’re oblivious to the curse.
They don’t know they’re cursed to be stabbed to death by the power of words and pens until the death actually happens and they’re gone. Until then, they carry on their merry way, being their beautifully badass selves. They throw themselves in front of those they protect, knowing they could die, but not knowing they are likely cursed for death by their creators.
So why do we want to adopt them?
They’re cursed to die anyway!
They’re precious cinnamon rolls – soft and nice and don’t deserve such cruel treatment. They never asked for THIS. They deserve the world yet the world doesn’t deserve them. 😭 We’re going to try and protect them in whatever way we can until the curse passes over – when they come out victorious or fall victim.
There must be a way to protect our favorites, isn’t there?
NOT ON HALLOWEEN THERE ISN’T. A curse is a curse is a curse and there’s little to stop it aside from not acknowledging it at all. If you don’t recognize there’s a curse, you don’t know and don’t think they’re cursed right?
But that’s okay. We get reminded in other ways in the book. 🙈
Sophia started blogging in February 2012 for the hell of it and is surprisingly still around. She has a GIF for nearly everything, probably listens to too much K-Pop and is generally in an existential crisis of sorts (she's trying her best). More of her bookish reviews and K-Pop Roundups can be found at The Arts STL.

I have so many favorites on Supernatural/ Paranormal books/ TV shows so there’s always a chance of them coming back thankfully! ๐
Sophia says
Don’t think of them dying or cursed and they’ll come back alive. ๐
Noel says
*sighs* True yet again, they’re so oblivious and stupid…especially in horror movies
Sophia says
Oof, I don’t even want to think about horror movies.

I love this post!
So true ..

Kaleena @ reader voracious says
This is the most amusing spin on the prompt, Soph. But you are right… don’t talk about them. Don’t look at them. Or they will be killed off
Sophia says
Thanks, Kaleena! And yes… speak NOTHING about them. Don’t even THINK about them.

I keep on thinking, why each character I love end up dead? Is it us? Is the author breaking our hearts? The time to save them is when the witching hours of Halloween arrives.
Neveen Badr says
I agree on saving them all.
