If you’re like most people in this day of social media and technology, you probably:
✅ Have multiple social media accounts
✅ Check them at least once a day (probably more)
✅ You’d know right away if your phone isn’t attached to you (maybe you’ve lost your purse or wallet more???)
✅ Can easily lose hours scrolling through social media
Let’s face it: social media can be addicting.
It’s provided more options to cause harm for someone, carried news across the globe in minutes rather than weeks, made us laugh and cry at the best and worst times. Social media has become a deep part of society, and oftentimes, who we are. It’s sometimes hard to let that go, even for a few hours.
I’ve been trying to do better, but I live on Discord way too much for my own good probably. The last time I did a technology detox (for a class assignment), I ended up reading all day… only to take a long AF nap in the evening. Embarrassing enough, I ended up having to miss class the next day. (The reading part was nice though.)
Anyone else? Please please tell me I’m not alone or I’ll hide forever in embarrassment.
But what if our favorite characters had social media accounts?
I spend more time lurking on the rest of my social media accounts. But what if Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs had Twitter accounts? What about Iron Man, Tori Dawson, Genie Lo or Jack King? Honestly, if you want my thoughts, this smells like a boatload of trouble I might not mind getting into.
Let’s talk about some of the things our favorite* characters would do on social media.
And how we’d end up unproductive. It’s so tempting to drop everything.
*They might not be your favorite characters, but if I’m going to use anyone’s favorites, it’s going to be mine. 😂
Side note: This week’s Top Ten Tuesday hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl took me a while to come up with something that would bend the rules a little.
Will Herondale and Tessa Grey will be our resident book quoters.
I love quotes. There’s always something hilarious and inspiring, stringing words beautifully together that you can relate to. Will and Tessa from The Infernal Devices are more than likely to create an account dedicated entirely to book quotes. Most of them will probably be from the timeless classics, but we’re bound to see a few favorites from recent years.
Also, can you imagine them having separate Twitter accounts and having a meet-cute where they’re quoting their favorite romantic passages? 🤔 All signs point to yes.
Or worse, Will singing about demon pox.
Jem Carstairs might have a Twitter War or two…
Our favorite Victorian Carstairs is more than likely lurking on Twitter than interacting – you might see him DMing loved ones. But when you do see him, he might have a Twitter spat with Will… but it’ll all be in good fun.
But more than likely, you might see him troll Will a few times. He’ll take it good-naturedly, but Jem has to try sometimes.
…Along with all our favorite enemies to lovers.
Now if you want things to be a little more heated, perhaps a few good roasts in the process, look no further than any enemies to lovers. They’ll be your bookish Wendy’s, always ready with a comeback. Only they’re not going to be roasting everyone, they’re just going after one person in particular.
Grimalkin, aka Bookish Grumpy Cat.
If you have little to no faith in humanity, you’ll love Grimalkin from The Iron Fey’s account. When he’s not rescuing pitiful humans from the claws of the fae realm, he’ll be talking about all the ways cats are far superior.
Hungry? Stay away from Natalie Tan and Robin Page.
I don’t mean actually stay away from Natalie Tan of Natalie Tan’s Book of Love and Fortune. It’s just not advised to follow Natalie when your stomach is growling and you want something right now. Or if you’re in the mood for some baked goods, you might want to tread lightly around Robin Page.
But if you want delicious food that will make your mouth water constantly… well, can’t stop you there.
Or if you’re out of recipe ideas, look no further than Lara Jean Song Covey.
Natalie Tan and Robin Page might not divulge the secrets to deliciously made goods, but don’t worry, Lara Jean has you covered. Not only would she probably get into a Twitter War with Peter Kavinsky or her sisters occasionally, but she’d also share baking advice and pictures of her latest creations.
Looking for love? Ask Lara Jean’s little sister.
As the one who put Lara Jean in a bit of a sticky situation, Kitty is still proud to say she got her older sister together with the one and only Peter Kavinsky. In fact, you’ll find her complaining about how Jake and Mia should just get their shit together and start dating.
Kitty will likely get into a few Twitter Wars too, but the book community will chime in when it comes to their favorite OTPs finally realizing they have chemistry. Maybe Kaz and Inej will get together at last. Or Kitty might find herself in a ditch, who knows?
Genie Lo would be a talking stick
This DM between Genie Lo and Quentin is all you need to know about this happening.
In Isabelle’s words, this is one of the most iconic exchanges ever. I’m 95% sure there would be more hilarious exchanges between the two. Maybe we’ll even witness Quentin being insulted by a stick (but it’s really Genie behind the account).
I’d be so unproductive.
I would more than likely forego more reading time than I already do — who has time to read a seriously boring and dense textbook when your favorite characters are right there on your screen? Far more entertaining if you ask me, but work doesn’t get done by itself. If anyone has successfully gotten themselves a clone or two, though…
Let’s talk, bookwyrms: which fictional characters would you follow on social media? Would you procrastinate more?
Sophia started blogging in February 2012 for the hell of it and is surprisingly still around. She has a GIF for nearly everything, probably listens to too much K-Pop and is generally in an existential crisis of sorts (she's trying her best). More of her bookish reviews and K-Pop Roundups can be found at The Arts STL.
If you enjoy her posts or found them helpful, consider tipping on KoFi!
Greg says
Kitty haha! She’d cause all KINDS of trouble on social media, I’m thinking. Grumpy Cat sounds like another good one. And Iron Man. Ooh I hadn’t thought of that, but Marvel characters’ social media accounts… oh my.
Sophia says
OMG could you imagine the chaos and banter with Marvel characters? As if some of the actors don’t do so already. 😂
Mir @FangirlPixieBlog says
Love how you did this post. The duck pic haha I can imagine that one for sure. Just an IG with ducks everywhere
Sophia says
LOL that is definitely something I could see Jem doing just to irritate Will out of nowhere.
Lydia says
Ooh, Lara Jean Song sounds like she’d be a great person to follow on social media.
My TTT .
Sumedha says
Haha SO MANY of your characters are ones I’d love to follow as well. The TID characters, especially Will, and Kitty from To All The Boys would be so fun to follow.
Poinsettia says
Yes, I think we’d all be very unproductive if our favorite characters were on social media! Here is our Top Ten Tuesday
Steph@paigesofbooks says
This post is perfect and I love it so much!!!!
Brooke Lorren says
That would be so funny… Jem posting pictures of ducks at Will. I didn’t think about them, but they would be great to follow because they’re book people!
Sophia says
Exactly! The ducks are just a bonus. 😌
Deanna @ A Novel Glimpse says
Yep. Pretty much all this.
Dedra @ A Book Wanderer says
Ha! I love this so much! It makes me want to spend more time on Twitter. I definitely would if I could follow my favorite characters. 🙂
AhanaRao says
Hahahaha what an interesting post! I love how you discussed on awareness of social media and it’s effect on us in the present day and no doubt, I’d have read all day and napped away too you’re not alone.
Hahahaha. I love the pictures you genius!! 🥰Also also I think Luc from Origin series if you’ve read Jennifer L. Armentrout, would hack into Twitter take over people’s accounts—especially hater accounts, and spread world-wide word on the awesomeness of Llamas. 😂
Sophia says
Aww thank you, Ahana! I try being genius when I can with the few tricks up my sleeve. 😌 I’ve read her Lux series but have NO clue who Luc is since I stopped after the second book. From the sounds of it, that would be hilarious to see!
Aleen @ Lampshade Reader says
These characters sound like a hoot!
Heather @ The Frozen Library says
Wow. This is so much more detailed than my post. XD I just listed my characters and gave simple reasons. How did you actually make accounts and texts and stuff for everyone?! O.o I’m impressed. 😛
Sophia says
I can’t reveal all my trade secrets. They’re top secret! 😉
Sam@wlabb says
What a fun post! I was happy to be well acquainted with all but one character. I can think of so many characters, who I would follow just for the food porn, but funny posts are important to me too. LJ is one of my favorite characters of all time, and not only would she give me the food, but I would want to see her clothing choices too. Loved her style
Sophia says
Ooooo yes, I liked LJ’s style too! (I’m more for the food, though but my priorities are food over anything else, haha.)
Anthea says
I love how you’ve turned this from a generic list into something amusing for me to read when I woke up. Thank you!
Sophia says
Happy to hear you enjoyed this, Anthea!
Books with Noel says
Imagine your OTPs when they post about each other though, goodness would I turn into a weird stalker Lol
Sophia says
Haha, I think that would make a lot of us into stalkers honestly! 11/10 would definitely stalk Tessa and Will online.
Sarah @ All The Book Blog Names Are Taken says
I really like how you did your list, very creative.
Danielle says
I’d definitely be more unproductive as I am now lmaooo! I don’t know a lot of these characters but I can only imagine how messy they’d get online.
Lauren @ Always Me says
Oh, yes! Genie Lo would be amazing to follow. 🙂
Lauren @ Always Me
Olivia Roach says
This was such a fun and creative post! I guess I would be crazy unproductive if any of the raven cycle gang had social media because I would want to know what they were doing. The couples starting drama and also the lowkey teasing and trying to pin the tweet where they started dating behind the scenes… crazy!#
Olivia-S @ Olivia’s Catastrophe
Sophia says
But it’s the good kind of crazy! 😉
Jorie says
Hallo, Hallo Sophia,
I wanted to participate in this lovely for TTT myself but I was struck down by a bad cold by mid-February; all my TTT posts went unseen and I’ll just share them lateron this Spring instead. However, when it comes to finding characters on social – some of my choices were Lizzie Bennett – as I thought it would be keenly interesting to view her thoughts on society today vs the society she knew of when she lived her own life; so that might involve some clever time travelling! lol Others I thought might be interesting would be Kay Hunter from Rachel Amphlett’s series – though she has so little time for herself or any downtime outside of her investigative career – I worried it make dig into her time with Adam! (her husband) Ergo – I didn’t fully develop a list of characters and of course having a severe cold hindered thinking too hard on the topic! lol
Liked how you approached this topic and it was a joy to read.
Sophia says
Jorie! It’s good to hear from you, and I’m glad you enjoyed this! Sorry to hear you had a cold; I hope you’re feeling better by now or will be soon. It’s completely okay to miss out on TTT and write the post later – your health is important and you should take care of yourself. 🙂
Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction says
This is such a fun post!! Yes, if we could follow our favorite characters on social media, we would never have time for anything else. I love your ideas about what your favorites would be talking about. 🙂
Clo says
*dies* this post is everything, I want this to be a thing like please I would drop everything to watch Will and Jem have twitter wars. Kitty meddling with others love lives, will Kaz and Inej let her live? Stay on twitter to find out xD
Sophia says
LOL I really want to know if Kitty survives. She might even change her Twitter to an entire Twitter show with her account name being, “Is Kitty Alive???”
